She is also the author of this blog and uploads all of the material as often as possible.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
While I don't have any big news to reveal as to where I am going to employed this coming school year I can say that it will not be as Super Snack Lady. I had a wonderfully fun year but have several possibilities for my own classroom. With that I must hang up my cape.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">NO WORRIES THOUGH!!! The ISU Extension Office is starting their hunt for the next Super Snack Person who will be just as fun, just as awesome, and teaches just as much about fresh produce as I did. So, below you can see the picture of me hanging up my cape as I move forward with my dream of becoming a teacher with my own classroom....

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Until I see you again at the grocery store, at the farmer's market, at the YMCA or anywhere in between I say: Keep on eating healthy! Remember how much fun we had last year and if you are in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grades get excited because nutrition will be coming back to your school in no time!
She is heavily involved in the Gather and Grow Friendship Garden located right next to Johnson School of the Arts and is also involved with the Garfield Garden when needed. Check out the photos below of fun events that have taken place around the gardens along with some of the progress that is being made!
Super Snack Lady enjoys yummy fruits in the warm (or in our case HOT) summer months. Nothing cools her down like some black, frozen grapes, fresh cut pineapple, or a cool apple straight out of the fridge.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Along with trying to eat healthy Super Snack Lady has also been keeping active. She wishes she had more time for the swimming pool or a gym that is inside but instead she's been casually training for a 5K run! Well, this last weekend Super Snack Lady took part in the Color Run in Des Moines. What is a Color Run? Well it's a 5K (approximently 3.2 miles) where you wear all white clothes and run/jog/walk and you go through check points. At these check points volunteers throw colored corn starch on you and you start to turn awesome fun colors! At the 5K this past weekend Super Snack Lady saw young kids (4 year olds) and even grandparents all suited up for the race. Check out the photos below to see Super Snack Lady enjoying her jog!
Super Snack Lady is trying her best to eat fresh veggies from the gardens as much as possible to keep eating healthy. What are you eating this summer and even better- where is it coming from? If possible you should go to local farmer's markets to eat local, fresh veggies (lettuce, spinach, and radishes are all in season currently).
Yet, as she looks at the calendar she can see that she is done with school visits for the year and there are only 4.5 days of school left. Where did the year go? Each month flew by faster than the month before and she truly enjoyed getting to know each class on an individual basis!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Now that school is over Super Snack Lady wants to know how you, yes YOU, are going to stay active and healthy over the summer. Below are some yummy and busy ways to keep healthy while Super Snack Lady and school takes a break for the summer months.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">1) SWIM! It's a full body workout that helps keep your muscles strong and helps your lungs get stronger too. Not to mention that when it's hot out that it's a great way to cool off. Just don't forget the sunscreen!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
2) Enjoy a cool, fresh snack! In May Super Snack Lady brought yogurt parfaits to your classroom. What was the recipe you ask? It's SIMPLE! Just buy vanilla flavored yogurt (Super Snack Lady loves Danen Light and Fit brand) and your favorite fruit. Wash fruit, cut it up, and put in the yogurt. Raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, tangerines, and blackberries all make great treats. Try mixing a couple fruits to find an extra yummy- and healthy- treat.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">3) Ride your bike in the evening! Riding your bike is not only fun but a great way to get your legs strong and to build stamina with your lungs. Super Snack Lady recommends doing it after dinner when it's a little cooler rather then in the middle of the day when it's so hot.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">4) Frozen grapes are DELICIOUS! Super Snack Lady loves frozen purple grapes. Not only are they a healthy snack but they make a great snack to cool you off in hot summer days.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">5) Sweet corn! We live in Iowa where we get the best sweet corn towards the end of July and early August. Grill it up, boil it, cut it off the cob and freeze it for winter months. No matter how you enjoy it make sure you get local, fresh sweet corn when it's ready and enjoy the yummy stuff that most states have to ship in from other sources. Being in Iowa isn't so bad after all, huh?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Enjoy your summer and know that the ISU Extension Office of Linn County along with the Iowa Department of Public Health is very excited to bring nutrition to YOUR school in the fall when school starts back up! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18042964616660089309noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-102618297454890573.post-72110417317936898382013-05-17T03:00:00.000-07:002013-05-17T03:00:05.886-07:00JSA Garden<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Super Snack Lady has been very busy helping Johnson School of the Arts to put in a garden at the church behind their school. Yesterday 10 Target volunteers along with Super Snack Lady and Garden Enrichment students got the garden mulched, the fence up, and the whole garden planted! WOW! SSL often gets the question of: "What do you eat spinach in other than salads?" Well, it can be cooked and eaten or put in lasagna or even as a pizza topping but otherwise you normally eat it raw.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Some of you might have heard about this craze called "Green Smoothies" that a lot of people are drinking. The main ingredient is SPINACH! The thing about making a green smoothie is that you still get all of the healthy benefits of the spinach but can't taste it at all. When making smoothies with spinach you have to remember back to your elementary art class days and remember if you mix specific colors together that you'll get another color. For example:
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">green spinach + red berries (strawberries, raspberries, etc) = brown colored smoothie
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">green spinach + light colored fruits (apples, pineapple, etc) = a green colored smoothie!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Recently Super Snack Lady tried to make a green smoothie at home. Below are pictures of what it ended up looking like along with the recipe!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Kids on Course is funded by the Zach Johnson Foundation (the Cedar Rapids pro golfer!) and does a lot of different activities in both Van Buren and Harrison Elementary Schools. These two schools also happen to be schools that Super Snack Lady visits!! So, a month or so ago Super Snack Lady was approached to join their Science Extravaganza night and she obviously said yes.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> The theme for this year's Science Extravaganza was Sustainability. The Kids on Course people broke it down into three parts: Sustainable You, Sustaining the Community, and Sustaining the World. They featured many different things such as how to recycle newspapers and make them into hats, how to recycle water bottles and make a bowling game out of it, how to take care of the Earth through recycling, and how to keep you sustained by taking care of yourself through exercise and eating right. That is where SUPER SNACK LADY came in!

Or do you avoid it at all costs?

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Super Snack Lady doesn't have any kids of her own but she is sometimes hesitant to go to the store during "peak kid hours" (as she calls them) as there is normally a lot of loud noises of kids arguing with parents over a specific food they want, but the parents don't want them to have. Or the kid is trusted to drive the shopping cart and they run into everything and everyone.

There is a good blog out there that focuses on healthy, affordable recipes and also gives other shopping tips. Check it out HERE! The posting from today focuses on how to have a successful shopping trip to the store with your child. Check it out for some good tips!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18042964616660089309noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-102618297454890573.post-29746141153630541942013-04-08T03:00:00.000-07:002013-04-08T03:00:16.232-07:00Community Garden by Johnson School of the Arts<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Super Snack Lady has spent the last several months going to meetings and connecting with people in the neighborhood around Johnson School of the Arts (better known as Wellington Heights) in an joint effort to get a community garden started somewhere close to the school.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This was challenging mainly because JSA doesn't have any grass at their school that can be used for a garden. We quickly made partners with First Congregational Church which is directly behind the school. They were gracious enough to let us use some of their property in order to make a garden that the whole community and neighborhood could enjoy and work together on.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">On Saturday April 6th we held a huge garden kick off event. We had a great turn out of about 65 people come and go through out the morning to make the garden prep happen!! Testing- that is the word of the month. Below are some tips are how to get kids in the right frame of mind for testing from a nutritional stand point:
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
Parents:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Get enough sleep. Kids should get 10-11 hours of sleep a night!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Get up and get going. Start your day with a couple jumping jacks or crunches or even hopping up and down. This will wake you up and get the blood in your body moving up towards your brain.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Start your morning with a good, solid breakfast full of whole grains. Oatmeal, whole grain toast, or whole grain cereal are great options.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Eat fruits and vegetables. Trying to eat healthy snacks of fruits and veggies will keep you healthy!

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Keep hydrated. That means drink lots of water and not so many sugary drinks like pop.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"> Teachers:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Take brain breaks between tests! (If you look at previous posts I've made I've posted several different videos that you can play quickly).

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Do breathing exercises to calm students' nerves and focus their brains. It can be as simple as having students sit up straight in their chairs, take a long, silent, deep breath in, and then slowly letting it out. You'd be surprised at how much calmer students can get through this simple breathing technique.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">This last fall I went to the Iowa Organic Agriculture Conference in Iowa City. I learned a lot about organic farming and I heard an amazing speaker, Will Allen, speak. For those of you who don't know who Will Allen is allow me to introduce you to him!

Will Allen is a former NBA basketball player. When he retired he needed something to do with his time and began to dive into organic farming. He now owns Growing Power located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and solely puts his efforts into running multiple "urban farms". What exactly is an urban farm?! Well it's when you take space in a city and create something magical on it! If you have grass you can dig it up and create a garden right there- perhaps it is in a city park or maybe it is in your own back yard no matter where you live. Something else Will Allen does is put gardens ON TOP OF BLACK TOP!! He has an urban garden in Milwaukee that used to be a parking lot!!

Needless to say, Will Allen is doing amazing things with growing produce in unlikely spaces. At the conference this last fall Will challenged everyone to think about spaces differently in your city. Your front yard? It could be a garden! The vacant lot next door? Garden! A vacant parking lot? Garden! What about a roof top? GARDEN! So, this naturally got Super Snack Lady thinking.....

Where can we put a garden at an elementary school that has no grass or field?? So I looked around and guess what I saw across the street- a BIG open space at a church! So this is the beginnings of a community garden for the students at Johnson School of the Arts. It doesn't look like much yet, but wait until it gets warmer....
Yes, she sometimes wears a cape to her school visits along with a variety of other shirts that encourage healthy eating. Are you wondering right now, "How am I supposed to do that too?!?!" Super Snack Lady totally understands! It's a challenge to get kids to try new things. To be honest, trying new fruits and veggies has to be fun, exciting, and interesting. It can be so much more than having your child eat "just two more bites of _______" before they can get up from the table.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Get all of the senses involved. Did you know that mushrooms smell like the woods or "the outside" as kids normally say? Or how about the nice, fuzzy outside of a peach? Not to mention the wonderful rainbow of colors that the earth has given us in all fruits and vegetables. Kids are even surprised at the crunch of an apple (yes, other fruits and vegetables other than carrots make a crunch!).

If getting their senses involved doesn't work there is one last ditch effort to be made: Cute, <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">fun video clips with songs and sometimes celebrities trying to convince kids to eat healthy or even be active. As this blog post is being written they are forecasting nearly a half of a foot of snow for Iowa. What is "in season" right now in Iowa?!?

While Super Snack Lady attempts to buy local she also knows that winter in Iowa is something you can't avoid. Things just don't grow here in December, January, and February. That is why your local grocery store can be such a great resource for you! They ship in produce from all over the United States and the world- where things are in season and at their prime for tasting delicious.

So, what exactly is in season right now? Look at the list below for some yummy, and probably more affordable, choices.

Collard Greens

Brussel Sprouts

Clementines

Dates

Grapefruit

Kale

Kiwi

Oranges

Pears

Sweet Potatoes

Tangerines

This doesn't mean you can't buy other produce, as your grocery store carries the same items all year round. However, if you buy things out of season they won't have the same full flavors or won't be as affordably priced. Keep that in mind as you can't go wrong with produce any time of the year!

Need to know what is in season during other parts of the year? A great resource can be found at Fruits and Veggies- More Matters. You can click and find out what is in season for every season or even all year round! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18042964616660089309noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-102618297454890573.post-64274025207355580212013-02-18T04:00:00.000-08:002013-02-18T04:00:02.957-08:00NewBo Night Recap<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">On Thursday February 7th Super Snack Lady hosted a Night at NewBo City Market. While it was too busy to keep track of how many kids and families stopped by to see Super Snack Lady and her friends, who were doing live cooking demonstrations, it was a big success!
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">So, what all happened at Night at NewBo?

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Super Snack Lady featured some healthy options from the NewBo City Market including fresh whole grain bread from Betty and Bobo's Better Breads, fresh made hummus from Zaytoon's Mediterranean Grill, and low fat ranch from P.H.A.T. Daddies. Kids and parents alike tried the yummy choices.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Super Snack Lady's friends, Tonia, Sharon and Stephanie did live cooking demonstrations in the Kirkwood Culinary Kitchen that included the families making homemade oatmeal that they could take with them, mini fruit pizzas with toppings of their choice, and lastly skillet lasagna which the kids helped chop, pour, and cook!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">A prize wheel that the kids spun and had to do the physical activity that the spinner landed on. Once they completed the motion then they got a prize.
